BCI Hosts USC SOM Summer Internship

These six students, [Back Row, L to R]: Jim Ford, Pete Loper, Jason Rogers [Front Row, L to R] Ashley Smith, Jessica McCutcheon, Lauren Crosby will be joining me in Cochabamba, Bolivia for a summer internship at the Viedma Burn Center during two three-week sessions. These students will spend their time getting a first hand view of the burn center through instruction in the operating room with Dr. Oscar Romero, making rounds alongside the Bolivian residents, working in the physical therapy department and the BCI clinic and in bedside care with the individual patients. This is an opportunity for them to leave the books and formal education of medical school, roll up their sleeves, and find out what really happens in the everyday working of a burn center in a poor country. Stay tuned for regular updates!!

Jonathan Hinshelwood

Who would have ever dreamed twenty years ago when Jonathan was just a cute little boy running around the gym at my church that one day he would be in medical school and spending part of his summer working with me in BCI. Jonathan graduated in 2006 from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Chemical Engineering and is now a second year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Jonathan was one of the initial three students to visit Bolivia as part of our first BCI student internship. Along with Daniel Eggart and Will Bynum, the three returned to Columbia, SC with a genuine heart for the children in the Viedma Burn Center in Cochabamba, Bolivia and formed an organization Medical Students for Burn Center Viedma (ms4bcv). See their video on the link at the left and participate in their online fundraiser!! Their fundraiser makes it easy to give up just one small luxury item for three weeks and help change lives at the same time!

Summer Internship

Last summer, BCI was honored to host three University of South Carolina medical students at our outpatient clinic at the public hospital burn unit in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Daniel, Will, and Jonathan did such an excellent job that we decided we should make it a yearly event. I am excited that this summer BCI will join with USC School of Medicine again in Bolivia for a summer internship begining May 30. Over the next few days I want to introduce you to the students who will be joining me at the burn center and then over the summer, please tune in for regular updates.
